John and Susan Landau completed the Rutgers Environmental Stewards (RES) program in 2021. Their capstone project focused on restoring Foote’s Pond Wood, a 24-acre public park near their home in Morristown, adjacent to an elementary school.
Once overrun by invasive species and littered with debris, the park is now a vibrant natural space. Spring peepers sing, bluebirds nest, and herons hunt in the pond. More importantly, the community has reconnected with the park, and the elementary school children have developed a deep bond with the space. With the Landaus’ support, two other Environmental Stewards from the 2023 class, installed a rain garden along the property line, and Girl Scouts planted a pollinator garden around the school’s sign.

Since launching this initiative, the Landaus have hosted annual site visits for RES students, inspiring them to take action in their own communities. They’ve welcomed countless volunteer groups—from scouts and high schoolers to corporate teams—and cultivated a dedicated community of regular volunteers. Everyone who meets the Landaus leaves feeling appreciated, empowered, and more informed about environmental stewardship.
Their impact extends far beyond Foote’s Pond, Morristown, and advancements with their Shade Tree Commission. The Landaus generously share their time and expertise, offering guidance, making site visits, and mentoring others. From the Tiny Forest in Summit to the India Brook restoration in Mendham, their influence is felt across northern New Jersey. Many have joined the RES program, volunteered with environmental organizations, or planted native species because of their encouragement.
Their “Going Native for Northern New Jersey” brochure has reached thousands of residents, spreading awareness and practical knowledge. They collaborate with shade tree commissions, secure grants, and contribute to local and statewide legislation, including the Invasive Speciesp Bill—setting a powerful example for others to follow.
The Landaus have been recognized by the Morris Parks Alliance, the Garden Club of America, and recently received the “Best Community Effort” award at the Land Ethics Symposium.
John and Susan Landau embody the spirit of Rutgers and the Environmental Stewards program—upholding scientific integrity, empowering others, fostering community, and demonstrating unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship.
We are proud to honor John and Susan Landau as our 2025 Alumni of the Year.
