On Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Rutgers Environmental Stewards (RES) Program proudly celebrates 20 years of empowering New Jersey residents to become informed and effective advocates for the environment. Since its founding, this transformative certificate program, offered through Rutgers Cooperative Extension, has trained 1,400 volunteers across all 21 counties in New Jersey.
Join the Celebration
To mark this milestone, the public is invited to the 20th Anniversary Impact Summit on Saturday, November 1, at the Rutgers Douglass Student Center in New Brunswick, NJ. This special event will showcase Steward projects, highlight alumni stories, and offer opportunities to connect with environmental leaders and organizations. Event fee $20. Register to attend.

The program equips adult learners with science-based knowledge on pressing environmental issues such as climate change, stormwater management, habitat restoration, and sustainable living. Graduates then apply their training through impactful volunteer projects in their own communities—making real change where it matters most.
“The program puts boots on the ground,” says Michele Bakacs, County Agent and Statewide Coordinator. “We give people the tools to understand the science and connect them with experts so they can make informed decisions and take meaningful action in their towns and neighborhoods.”
A Legacy of Impact
Over the past 20 years, Rutgers Environmental Stewards have:
- Completed 316 community projects in partnership with over 50 organizations, many focused on climate resilience and sustainability.
- Contributed 22,439 hours of volunteer service across New Jersey.
- Generated $860,136 in conservation value through their efforts.
- Enhanced or created 145 habitat sites, supporting biodiversity and ecosystem health.
From serving on municipal green teams and environmental commissions to restoring native habitats and reducing waste with local utilities, Stewards are making a measurable difference.

Voices of Change
“The RES program was truly transformative,” says Kim Correro of Jersey City. “It gave me the tools and confidence to take meaningful action. In a time of ecological urgency, RES empowers everyday people to become environmental leaders.”
“The program sparked my passion for environmental ethics and justice,” shares Barbara Boucke of Cranbury Township. “Now, as a Rutgers student majoring in Biological Sciences, I’m continuing the journey RES helped me begin.”
“I didn’t come from a science background,” says Raymond Croot of Hillsborough. “But the RES program gave me the knowledge and confidence to contribute meaningfully as a volunteer with the Raritan Headwaters Association.”
Whether you’re looking to deepen your environmental knowledge, give back to your community, or support local sustainability efforts, the Rutgers Environmental Stewards Program is your gateway to action. Ready to make a difference? Learn more about the program.
