Fall, 2026
Zoo New Jersey: Animals in the Garden State
Discover the fascinating animals that call New Jersey home! This fall we highlight unique species, their ecological importance, and the environmental issues that impact their survival. You’ll gain a deeper appreciation for local wildlife while learning practical ways to support their management efforts. Join us in exploring the rich biodiversity found across New Jersey’s landscapes and waterways. This ongoing webinar series is conducted in partnership with the Marine Extension Program Seminar Series.
10/19 – New Jersey’s Ospreys: A Symbol of a Healthy Coast – Ben Wurst, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ– During this talk, Ben Wurst, Senior Wildlife Biologist with Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, will talk about the life history of ospreys, their recovery, and efforts to monitor and manage ospreys over the past two decades with emphasis on engaging the public in reporting nest activity online. He will also discuss current issues with food stress, weather impacts, and reduced productivity at nests in the coastal region.
10/26 – Managing Mosquitoes in New Jersey – Dr. Dina Fonseca, Rutgers University – Fogging or spraying for mosquitoes or biting flies around the yard and garden with an insecticide can be very harmful to pollinators. Even if done in the evening, insecticide drift can end up on pollen and flowers impacting beneficial insects. Dr. Dina Fonseca will discuss mosquito research in New Jersey and options for environmentally friendly mosquito management.
11/2 – Seals in New Jersey – Jacalyn Toth Sullivan, Stockton University – Join Jacalyn Toth Sullivan for a conversation on New Jersey’s growing population of marine mammal winter residents. Harbor seals seasonally occur in coastal and bay systems throughout the state during the cooler months; learn about their population dynamics, food habits, and local to coast-wide movement patterns. See what researchers have learned from New Jersey’s first dedicated harbor seal satellite tagging study (Where do our harbor seals go after they leave New Jersey? How far offshore do harbor seals occur? And so much more!).
11/9 – Monitoring Eels in New Jersey – Dr. Heather Fenyk, Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership & Kaitlin Gannon, Rutgers University – The American eel is a fascinating species that inhabits rivers throughout New Jersey, and along the whole U.S. east coast, and migrates to reproduce hundreds of miles offshore in the Sargasso Sea. The population of American eels in New Jersey and along the east coast is depleted and requires additional efforts to aid in rebuilding. Join Dr. Heather Fenyk and Kaitlyn Gannon to learn more about the biology of this species and what groups are doing here in New Jersey to monitor and study this species, including how you can volunteer to get involved and help make a difference!
11/16 – The Plight of the Diamondback Terrapin: A Story of Resilience and Survival – Dr. John Wnek, MATES Project Terrapin – The northern diamondback terrapin is a native New Jersey turtle species, living in the brackish coastal salt marshes, tidal creeks, and estuaries along both the Atlantic Coast and Delaware Bay. Learn why the terrapin is critical to the ecology of Barnegat Bay and about the Marine Academy of Technology and Natural Science’s Project Terrapin and their efforts to protect this species and the whole of Barnegat Bay estuary. Join Dr. John Wnek as he considers how the terrapin’s adaptability and resilience may be a lesson for us all.
Our Earth Day, Every Day webinar series focuses on steps everyone can take to protect the environment. We can all do our part to take actions that make our homes more sustainable, from environmentally-friendly lawn care, to recycling, to conducting a home energy audit. These actions, more than ever, start at home.

Rock You Like a Hurricane: Hurricane Science
Featuring Dr. Travis Miles with Rutgers University.
This session explored how hurricanes work, how they are changing, and the variety of observation platforms used to study ...them. Buoys, drones, aircraft, and underwater gliders are all used to study hurricanes, but we focused on underwater gliders (autonomous robots) for this talk. All of the data collected by Rutgers researchers helps scientists track and predict hurricanes more accurately, not just here in New Jersey, but all over the world.Show More

The Value of Bivalves: Learning About New Jersey's Shellfish Aquaculture Industry
Recorded on 5/11/26
Join us to learn about New Jersey's shellfish aquaculture industry, including what species are farmed, how they are grown, and ...where these farms are located at the Jersey Shore. This presentation features information about how bivalve farming improves our marine environments, supports our local economy, and contributes to a healthy and delicious diet.Show More
Insect & Pest Management
Invasive Insects Update: Spotted Lanternfly, Emerald Ash Borer and Hornets
Featuring Dr. George Hamilton, Rutgers University.
New Jersey’s forests, farms, and residents face invasive insect pests including spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer. Dr. George ...Hamilton, Rutgers Extension Specialist in Pest Management, provides an update on efforts to combat these pests, as well as a discussion on some of the large wasps we may — and may not — encounter in the Garden State: European hornets, cicada killer wasps, and the newsworthy Asian giant hornet.Show More

Autumn Leaves: Conditions that Affect Leaf Color
Featuring Dr. Jason Grabosky with Rutgers University.
This session explored the importance of leaves to trees and the role that chlorophyll plays in leaf color. The timing ...of leaf color changes is often related to shorter days but can also change due to stressors such as heat, lack of water, and damage to the tree. Weather and temperature can impact the intensity of the leaf's new color. Lastly, we were given tree recommendations to plant for dazzling fall yellow and red leaf colors.Show More

Fire’s Role in Ecosystem Health
This session explored how prescribed fire not only aids in protecting life and property from the ...catastrophic wildfire, but also how it supports ecosystem health. Prescribed fire used appropriately can benefit habitats for both flora and fauna, while also supporting hazardous fuel and invasive plant species mitigation efforts. Lastly, we explored the unfamiliar benefits of how a wildfire essentially promotes habitat diversity and natural environmental processes.Show More

Blinded by the Light: Light Pollution
Featuring Stephen Mariconda with DarkSky New Jersey
This session explored how light pollution disrupts ecosystems, obscures the night sky, and harms human health. Artificial light can ...also impact animal predator/prey dynamics, mating cycles, and feeding patterns. We learned how to reverse light pollution through the 5 principles of responsible lighting practices and how to advocate for policies that reduce light pollution in New Jersey and beyond.Show More
