Nancy completed the RES course in 2022, inspired and ready to use her training to better the environment in her community. Already familiar with the Environmental Education Center (EEC) in Somerset County, Nancy chose to complete her certification project by improving the biodiversity on the property. She began by inventorying invasive Callery pear trees and initiated their removal and replacement with native species.
Nancy orchestrated the donation of native tree species from Duke Farms and secured a $1,000 grant from The Garden Club of Somerset Hills to purchase additional native trees and shrubs. Her efforts led to the startup of a native plant nursery and propagation program at the EEC for onsite restoration projects and future donations to other habitat enhancement work. In total, 300 trees were procured along with protective fencing.
Nancy also designed and created an educational flyer and map, now posted in the EEC kiosk, to educate park patrons about the importance of choosing native trees. She continues her work with the EEC native tree arboretum as an active volunteer.
Somerset County Park Commission recognized Nancy’s dedication and impact by honoring her with the 2023 SCPC Volunteer of the Year award. The award was presented to her by Nancy D’Andrea, Park Commission President, Dan Hayes, Somerset County Park Commission Director, and Dan Ross, Environmental Stewardship Supervisor.
